Should I hire a freelancer per project or a monthly design partner?

Asked by agencies and startups looking for ongoing design and development, often after a first project.

Designer and developer. I design and build these projects myself.

If you have one clear job (a site, an app, a rebrand), a fixed-price project is cheaper and easier to manage. If you have a steady stream of requests every week, a monthly partner is better value: mine is $2,500 a month for unlimited requests handled one at a time, about 2 to 3 days each, paused or cancelled any month.

When a fixed project is right

The job has a clear end, you can describe it in a page, and nothing else is queued behind it. You pay once, agree the scope in writing and own everything at handover.

When a monthly partner is right

  • New landing pages or campaign pages every month
  • An agency with client sites to build
  • A product team that needs design and front-end work alongside its engineers
  • A site that needs steady updates rather than one rebuild

How to test it

Start with one fixed project. If it goes well and you find yourself with a list of next things, switch to the monthly plan. You can pause it in a quiet month.

Landing page
$700 in 5 days
Website
$1,999 in 14 days
Monthly partner
$2,500 a month, pause anytime

When this is not the right fit

If you need several people working in parallel on the same day, you need a team or an agency, not a single partner.
