How to Choose a C3PAO for Your CMMC Assessment

Choose a C3PAO by confirming it is currently authorized or accredited on the Cyber AB Marketplace, that it has not consulted for you in a way that creates a conflict, that it can field a qualified team when you need it, and that its quote covers the same scope as the others you compare.^[1][2]

How C3PAOs are vetted

• Authorization or accreditation by the Accreditation Body, and ISO/IEC 17020 compliance within 27 months of authorization.^[1]
• A Level 2 assessment of their own systems by DCMA DIBCAC, and a foreign ownership, control or influence (FOCI) review.^[1]
• Tier 3 background investigations for everyone on the assessment team and in quality assurance.^[1]
• A quality assurance function that checks results before they go into eMASS.^[1]

What to check

1. Current status. Look the firm up on the Cyber AB Marketplace right before you sign.^[2]
2. Conflict of interest. C3PAOs must follow the Accreditation Body’s conflict of interest policy and keep records of organizations they consulted for.^[1] If a firm helped you prepare, ask how it separates that from the assessment.
3. Team. Every assessment needs a Lead CCA and at least one other CCA.^[1] Ask who they will be and their experience with companies like yours.
4. Availability. Secureframe counted 103 C3PAOs in March 2026.^[3] Ask for a date in writing.
5. Price and scope. Give every firm the same scope documents so the quotes are comparable.
6. Closeout. Ask how they handle a POA&M closeout assessment within 180 days, and what it costs.^[1]
