How to Choose a CMMC Consultant
By Shaheer Malik · Updated Oct 22, 2026
Pick a consultant that is registered as an RPO with the Cyber AB, has done Level 2 readiness for companies your size, scopes the work in writing, and does not promise you a certification: only a C3PAO can certify you.[1][2]
What a good consultant does
- Helps you define the CMMC Assessment Scope, often shrinking it with a CUI enclave.[3]
- Runs a gap assessment against the 110 NIST SP 800-171 Rev. 2 requirements and scores it the way an assessor would: 1, 3 or 5 points per requirement.[3]
- Builds the System Security Plan and a realistic remediation plan. An open System Security Plan blocks even a Conditional status.[3]
- Prepares evidence in final form; drafts do not count in an assessment.[3]
Questions to ask
- Are you a Registered Provider Organization? (Check the Cyber AB Marketplace yourself.)[2]
- How many Level 2 readiness projects have you finished for companies our size, and can we speak to one?
- Is the price fixed for a defined scope, or hourly? What is not included?
- Do you also run C3PAO assessments? A C3PAO must follow the Accreditation Body’s conflict-of-interest policy and record whom it has consulted for, so ask how they keep the two apart.[3]
- Will you hand over everything you produce, so another firm can pick it up?
Red flags
- A guaranteed pass or a promise to “certify” you.
- A price quoted before anyone has looked at your scope.
- Pressure to buy their software or managed service as part of readiness.
- No written statement of work.

FAQ
What is the difference between a CMMC consultant and a C3PAO?
A consultant (usually a Registered Provider Organization) helps you prepare. A C3PAO is the authorized assessor that conducts the Level 2 certification assessment.
Do I need a CMMC consultant?
No, if your team understands NIST SP 800-171 and has time. Many small contractors hire one for scoping, the gap assessment and the System Security Plan.
How much does a CMMC consultant cost?
It depends on scope and how much remediation you need; most firms quote per project after a scoping call. Get at least two written quotes for the same scope.
