Squarespace to Framer migration, rebuilt properly

Squarespace only lets part of a site out, so most of the move is a rebuild. Every page is redesigned in Framer, the blog comes across, and every old URL is redirected.

Quick answer: A Squarespace site of up to about 25 pages can move to Framer in 14 days for a fixed $1,999 on my redesign sprint. Squarespace exports only part of a site, as a WordPress-format XML file: layout pages, one blog and basic blocks. Everything else is rebuilt in Framer from the live site, and every old URL is redirected on Framer Pro.

Why teams move from Squarespace to Framer

What comes across from Squarespace, and how

From SquarespaceHow it moves to Framer
Layout pagesTheir text and images export in the XML file. The design is rebuilt in Framer.
The blogExports in the XML file, but only one blog page. A second blog is moved by hand.
Store, portfolio, index, album and calendar pagesThese do not export. They are rebuilt in Framer or replaced.
Product, video and audio blocksThese do not export, and are rebuilt.
Headers, footers and sidebars set per pageThese do not export. The site's navigation is designed fresh.
Style settings and custom CSSThese do not export. The design is rebuilt rather than copied.
DraftsThese do not export. Publish or copy anything you want to keep.

How I move a Squarespace site to Framer

The same six steps on every move:

  1. Inventory every URL. From the sitemap and analytics, list every page that exists today and decide for each: keep, redirect or drop.
  2. Export what the platform allows. Each platform lets different things out. What cannot be exported is rebuilt from the live site.
  3. Rebuild the design in Framer. Every page is redesigned and built natively in Framer, not copied pixel for pixel.
  4. Import the CMS content. Content goes into Framer CMS collections; a sample is checked before the rest is imported.
  5. Recreate titles and redirects. Titles and descriptions carry across page by page, and every old URL gets a 301 redirect on Framer Pro.
  6. Switch over, then watch. The old site stays live until you approve the new one. After the switch, old URLs are tested and search coverage is watched.

What is specific to Squarespace:

The 14 days, written down

The move runs on the website redesign sprint: $1,999 fixed, for a site of up to about 25 pages, with the old site live until you approve the new one.

  1. Days 1 to 2: The read. What the current site gets right, what it costs you, and which pages actually earn their traffic. This is the part that decides whether the redesign is a restyle or a rethink, and sometimes it changes the plan.
  2. Days 3 to 7: Design. Every page designed against the real content, not placeholder text. You see the pages that matter first, so disagreements happen while they are still cheap.
  3. Days 8 to 11: Build. Built in Framer and made editable, with the component set your team will reuse for pages that come later.
  4. Days 12 to 14: Redirects and launch. Every old URL mapped to its new home, analytics reconnected, and the switch made only once you have signed off on the new site.

Squarespace to Framer questions

Can Squarespace export my whole site?

No. Squarespace exports part of a site as a WordPress-format XML file: layout pages, one blog and basic blocks. Store, portfolio, index and other page types, plus custom CSS and style settings, do not export, so they are rebuilt.

Will I lose my Google rankings moving from Squarespace to Framer?

Not if every old URL is redirected. Each one gets a 301 to its new page on Framer Pro, including any redirects you had set up in Squarespace.

What happens to my Squarespace subscription?

Keep it until the new site is live and the redirects have been checked, then cancel it.

Do I need Framer Pro?

Yes, for a migration. Framer's own guide says the Basic plan does not include site redirects.
