CMMC Compliance Software: What It Can and Can’t Do

By Shaheer Malik · Updated Oct 28, 2026

CMMC compliance software helps you document and track the work: the System Security Plan, the POA&M, evidence for each requirement and your score. It cannot make you compliant or give you a CMMC status; only an assessment of your own systems does that, and no software is “CMMC certified.”[1]

What it usually does

What it can’t do

If the software holds CUI or security data

A tool that stores your security protection data (configurations, logs, vulnerability data) is a Security Protection Asset in your scope; one that stores CUI must meet the cloud requirements for CUI.[1] Ask the vendor which applies and how it is authorized.

Questions to ask a vendor

  1. Will our CUI or security data be stored in your service? If so, what is your FedRAMP status?
  2. Which requirements does the tool help with, and which does it actually perform?
  3. Can we export the SSP, POA&M and evidence in a format an assessor accepts?
  4. Who on your side can access our data?

Federal News Network reports that DoD’s CMMC reform task force recommended machine-readable evidence criteria (OSCAL) and possibly free tools, subject to funding.[3] Nothing has been released yet.

FAQ

What is the best CMMC compliance software?

The one that fits your scope: it should handle SSP, POA&M and evidence for all 110 Level 2 requirements, export cleanly for an assessor, and be authorized for CUI if it will store CUI.

Is there CMMC-certified software?

No. CMMC statuses apply to an organization’s information systems, not to products.

Can software automate a CMMC gap analysis?

It can structure and score one, but someone still has to check each requirement against how your systems actually work.
