UI vs UX Design: What's the Difference? (2026)

UI and UX are used together so often that people assume they are the same. They are not.

This guide explains the difference in plain language. You will learn what each means, how they differ, and how they work together. For quick definitions, see UI and UX in the glossary.

What is UX design?

UX design, or user experience design, is about how a product works and feels to use. It covers research, structure, flows, and usability.

UX asks the big questions. Who is this for, what do they need, and how do they get there with the least friction. It is the foundation everything else sits on.

What is UI design?

UI design, or user interface design, is about how a product looks and how you interact with it. It covers layout, color, type, icons, and states.

UI turns the UX plan into something people can see and touch. It is the visual and interactive surface of the experience.

UI vs UX: the key differences

Here is the difference at a glance.

A simple analogy

Think of a house. UX is the floor plan: where rooms go and how you move between them. UI is the interior: the finishes, colors, and details.

A beautiful interior on a bad floor plan is still a bad house. Good UX and good UI need each other.

How UI and UX work together

They are two parts of one process, not rivals. UX comes first, then UI brings it to life.

You research and plan the experience, then design the interface that delivers it. When one is weak, the whole product suffers. This is why I handle both together, with no handoff gap.

Which one do you need?

Most projects need both. The question is usually where to start.

If users are confused or dropping off, start with UX. If the product works but looks dated or off brand, focus on UI. For a new product, you need the two as one effort.

Common myths

MythReality
UI and UX are the sameRelated, but different disciplines
UX is just wireframesIt is research, flows, and logic too
UI is just making it prettyIt is clarity and interaction, not decoration
You only need oneMost products need both

Need both done well?

I handle UX and UI together, so nothing is lost between them. See my services, my SaaS design page, or get a quote.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between UI and UX?

UX is how a product works and feels, covering research, flows, and usability. UI is how it looks and responds, covering layout, color, type, and states. They work together.

Which is more important, UI or UX?

Both matter. Strong UX with weak UI feels clumsy, and beautiful UI on weak UX frustrates users. Most products need both done well.

Can one person do both UI and UX?

Yes. Many product designers, including me, handle both, which keeps the experience consistent with no handoff gap.

Does UX or UI come first?

UX comes first. You research and plan the experience, then UI designs the interface that delivers it.

Is UI design just visual design?

No. UI includes visuals, but also interaction, states, and clarity. Its job is to make the experience easy and on brand, not just pretty.
