Prompt

The input or instruction given to an AI model.

A prompt is the text instruction or context you give an AI model to get a response. Prompt design — how a request is phrased and what context it includes — heavily influences the quality of the output.

In AI product design, much of the value lies in turning a blank prompt box into structured, guided inputs so users don't have to be prompt experts.

Key characteristics

  • The input or instruction given to an AI model to produce a response.
  • Quality of output depends heavily on clarity, context and examples.
  • Prompt engineering is the practice of crafting effective prompts.
  • Techniques include role-setting, few-shot examples and step-by-step instructions.

Example

Instead of "write about shoes", a strong prompt says "Write a 50-word product description for waterproof trail-running shoes, aimed at beginners, in a friendly tone" — and gets a usable result.

Frequently asked questions

What is prompt engineering?

The craft of designing inputs that reliably get useful outputs from AI models — using clear instructions, relevant context, examples, constraints and an explicit desired format.

Why does the same prompt give different answers?

Most models sample with some randomness (temperature), so outputs vary. Lower randomness and more specific prompts produce more consistent results.

Need this done, not just defined?

I design and build it — Framer sites, product UI/UX, and more.
